Microbiology Workshop 2008 report

The first GCOE Microbiology Workshop, organized by Prof. Hiroshi Takagi, was held in the Graduate School of Biological Sciences on March 14, 2008.Approximately 40 students and researchers attended, including Profs. Roy Doi and Kenneth Burtis from the UC Davis College of Biological Sciences.

After an opening address by Prof. Hisaji Maki, Prof. Doi gave a special lecture on the Clostridium cellulovorans cellulosome, a large extracellular enzyme complex that is capable of degrading plant cell walls. As well as being an outstanding international scientist on the molecular and cellular biology of microorganisms, Prof. Doi has also been an excellent instructor for young scientists, including many Japanese. With his friendly and clear speaking style, he gave a fascinating description of the structure, function and molecular mode of action of the cellulosome. Four young Assistant Professors from NAIST, Drs. Nobuyuki Yoshida, Hideki Nakayama, Hiroki Ashida and Taku Oshima, then gave short presentations about their research on unique microorganisms and enzymes. The participants felt that the exchange of information at the workshop was mutually beneficial.

On the previous day, Prof. Doi had visited several microbiology laboratories, where the students and young researchers spent valuable time in one-to-one discussions with Prof. Doi.

This workshop provided a very good opportunity to make international connections, and we hope that an expanded symposium on these topics will be held in the near future.
